Devan Trey Releases New Single “MUMBAI MONEY”

Devan, thank you for joining us today! Let’s start from the beginning. Can you share a bit about your journey as an Indian American artist in the hip hop scene? How did you get your start in music?

Hell yeah bro, thanks for having me. Growing up as an Indian American, music was always around me, whether it was Bollywood soundtracks at family gatherings, or hip hop playing at school events and parties. One of my friends from my street who did music started locally popping while I was growing up, and another one is working at Empire to this day, so I definitely had heavy exposure to the culture. I started getting into music myself first as a producer, probably around 14 or 15 I believe, just cooking up on Garageband. I gradually became hella serious about it in high school, selling beats as a side hustle and really just trying to get my foot in the door in any way possible bro.

Growing up, were there any particular artists or influences, either from the U.S. or India, that shaped your sound and style in hip hop?

To be honest with you, just listening to Rodeo from Travis Scott when it dropped around 2015 was the sole reason I got into making beats. Artists like Travis and A$AP Rocky were definitely major influences for me in terms of sound, even to this day bro. I swear that kinda dark, psychedelic soundscape from that whole wave at that time was my daily motivation. Also Drake was my favorite artist throughout high school. I wasn’t into hiphop music from India as much growing up, but as y’all gonna find out for yourselves, I got a whole like indie singing side to my artistry as well, which I’d like to credit legends like Arjit Singh for. But I ain’t tryna speak too much on that just yet. Everyone's gonna just have to be patient.

Your new single "MUMBAI MONEY" has a unique sound and vibe. Can you tell us the inspiration behind the track? What message are you trying to convey with this song?

To be completely honest with you, I was really inspired to make this the first song of my professional career as an artist, especially under the label my family Avi, Sidd and I founded together with D3VIOUS UNTITLED. I feel like this whole project is a very honest and real showing of our shared roots and collective pride to be growing up brown in the Bay and America as a whole, you know? I guess you could say this is my statement piece self introduction to this whole game bro, and rather than shy away from my heritage and identity to play this game, I’m choosing to not only embrace it but showcase it to the whole world.

The title “MUMBAI MONEY” is intriguing, what does it represent for you? Is there a personal connection to Mumbai or a particular story behind the title?

Mumbai is to India what LA is to America, you know. Just a melting pot of food, arts, culture, all of that, which then kinda translates into the biggest entertainment hub of their respective countries. Even with the chorus, the whole “Getting money in Mumbai,” I’m really just trying to make that ever so apparent as a way to pay homage to what this beautiful city means to our people. If you’re making Mumbai kinda Money, you’re honestly just popping bro. I don’t know if you saw the Ambani wedding that was out there in the media for awhile and everything, but I swear that shit lasted like 7 months or something, must have cost them like a billi. That’s gotta tell you everything you need to know, the city of Mumbai to me symbolizes both hustle and luxury, and I wanted MUMBAI MONEY to reflect that energy.

In “MUMBAI MONEY,” you blend elements of Indian culture with hip hop. How do you navigate merging these two worlds, and what challenges or rewards come with that?

It’s definitely a balancing act, but it’s something I think I’m passionate about. Combining two distinct worlds can be tricky bro, especially when you’re trying to stay authentic to both sides. But that’s also where the reward lies, when you hear a s no itar over a trap beat and it just clicks, that’s that music magic at its finest. The challenge is making sure both cultures shine without diluting either one, but I feel like that’s what keeps the creative process fresh.

Can you walk us through your creative process when crafting a song like "MUMBAI MONEY”? How did the concept, beat, and lyrics come together?

Yeah bro. What’s crazy actually is if I’m not mistaken, the beat for MUMBAI MONEY is the last I made to this point. I remember making the beat in maybe 15 minutes on my laptop at my parent’s crib. One of my biggest mentors and inspirations for even doing all this music and whatnot, my brother Todd from NY, had just hit my phone talking about how it would be absolutely crazy if the next song I did was something related to my heritage and roots. Next thing I know, I did the beat right after the call, wrote to it that night, and booked a studio out in SF that same week. Needless to say, the song came out the way it did and we’re here.

Did you collaborate with any producers or other artists on this track?

If so, how did those collaborations influence the final outcome? Nah bro, this whole song from scratch like I said, straight from the depths of my mind to your ears.

What was the most challenging aspect of creating “MUMBAI MONEY,” and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge for me was honestly finding that right balance between modern, heavy hitting trap shit and more traditional Indian sounds. I experimented with a lot of different instruments and styles before landing on something that felt right with that flute you hear in the song, and the phonk inspired drums. It was all about trial and error, and having the patience to let the sound evolve naturally. But it would have been a damn shame if I couldn’t pull it off, because Bollywood and Indian music has been sampled by so many legends before me bro.

As an Indian American in the hip hop industry, how important is it for you to represent your cultural heritage in your music? How do you see this impacting your audience?

It’s definitely super important to me. I mean rap music is more global than ever, and from the India side of the world, Punjabi music’s been going crazy for a hot minute, and just this year, Hanumankind dropped the craziest music video I’ve seen to date. So just to have the opportunity to add to this legacy as it's being built in front of my own two eyes is a surreal experience bro. For my audience, especially those who share a similar background, I hope it’s empowering to see someone who looks like them and shares their experiences making waves in a genre that hasn’t always been inclusive. I love the idea of challenging norms when it comes to the culture and defying every damn stereotype bro.

Have you faced any challenges or stereotypes in the music industry due to your background? How have you turned these challenges into strengths?

There’s definitely been some challenges, from people not taking me seriously because I don’t fit the typical rapper mold I guess you could say, to being underestimated simply because of my background. But I’ve learned to use that as fuel. It’s about flipping the narrative, taking what people see as a limitation and turning it into your superpower. Being different is what makes me stand out.

What do you hope "MUMBAI MONEY" communicates to both your Indian American fans and the broader hip hop community?

I hope it communicates that music is for everyone. Whether you’re from Mumbai, New York, or anywhere in between, the culture is universal, and it's more global than ever before. Life is about struggle, hustle, and celebrating who you are. I want this song to resonate with anyone who’s appreciative of their own grind, no matter where they come from.

"MUMBAI MONEY" is already generating buzz, what’s next for you? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations we should be on the lookout for?

I ain’t tryna say too much, but best believe the next single or two-pack i got lined up is going to completely flip the script on everyone. I also got a few exciting collaborations in the works for sure.

Where do you see your music evolving in the next few years? Are there new sounds or themes you’re excited to explore?

To be completely real with you bro, I don’t ever want to have the label of being just a rapper, you feel me? Like I want to explore everything- and when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING. Like y’all ain’t hear me even sing yet. I also plan to definitely dive deeper into blending genres and experiment with more cinematic elements in my sound. I’m a big cinephile, but that’s a whole nother story. I guess what I’m trying to say is I really value every angle of music as an art form, whether it be performing, music, visuals, etc. So simply put, expect complete chaos but beautiful in my own artistic ways.

Lastly, what message do you have for young artists, particularly those from diverse backgrounds, who are trying to break into the hip hop scene?

Stay true to yourself and your roots. This industry can try to box you in, but your unique perspective is your strength bro. Don’t be afraid to embrace what makes you different because that’s what will set you apart. Keep grinding, stay consistent, and don’t let anyone define your journey for you. This shit is a straight videogame.

When you’re not in the studio, what are some things you enjoy doing? Do these activities influence your music in any way?

I like experiencing things bro. And I know that sounds like a crazy generic blanket statement or whatever, but let me explain. I basically enjoy doing anything that isn’t something routine or necessarily something I’ve done before on a regular occasion. And that to me is everything that life consists of, not to get too philosophical and shit. But yeah bro, definitely just striving daily to live like this heavily influences my music. I think I can always draw from the random and visceral experiences I keep trying to cultivate every second of my existence, if that makes sense.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, from any genre, who would it be and why?

Travis Scott, 100%. Travis is one of my biggest inspirations for producing, engineering, and striving to do everything myself end to end. I mean you take one listen to his music and you can clearly tell the incredible dedication that goes into that sound and the whole aesthetic that goes along with that shit. And that's to this day a level I swear I’m constantly striving for bro.

Before we wrap up, can you share a fun fact about yourself that your fans might not know?

Most people always wonder why I spell my name with an A instead of Devin, which is how it's pronounced. The Devan spelling is actually an ode to my mother and the family I started this music shit with, Sidd and Avi. I also got her name tatted on my right wrist. Devan means “Divine” in Hindi, so this is me paying homage to my mother via her native language. Also, my last name Trey is Italian for Three, so my name literally translates to “Divine Three.” Call it corny or whatever if you want, but like I said, I started all this with my brothers Sidd and Avi. Devan Trey is like a literal embodiment of that concept bro.

Thanks for your time, Devan! Where can our readers find “MUMBAI MONEY” and follow your journey online?

Hell yeah, thanks for having me. You can find “MUMBAI MONEY” on all streaming platforms, and follow me on IG, TikTok, and YouTube @devantrey everywhere for more updates on what’s next from me. Everyone gotta tap in bro.

Digital Underground Co-Founder Chopmaster J Survives Health Scare, Heart Surgery, and Near-Death Experience Announces New Album and Podcast with Son S.O.T.U.

Los Angeles, CA - As hip-hop celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023, Jimi “Chopmaster J” Dright, co-founder of the iconic group Digital Underground (DU), faced significant health challenges, causing him to miss much of the celebration. Now, as DU marks its 35th anniversary and the August 25th birthday of his late bandmate Gregory Edward Jacobs, known as Shock G or Humpty Hump, Chopmaster J is ready to make the most of these milestones.  After surviving a debilitating fall, triple bypass heart surgery, and a near-death experience (NDE), Chopmaster J has a renewed appreciation for life. Together with his son, S.O.T.U., they are preparing to release “Sex Packets 2 – The ReUp” and launch a new podcast, “The Chop Shop.”

Digital Underground, one of the first hip-hop bands, included members Money B, DJ Fuze, and an 18-year-old Tupac Amaru Shakur, who Jimi is credited with discovering. The group's rise to fame in the early '90s featured hits like “Doowutchyalike,” “Freaks of the Industry,” “Same Song,” and “Kiss You Back.” Their debut album, “Sex Packets,” released in 1990, was later named one of The Source Magazine’s “100 Best Rap Albums Ever.” “Sex Packets 2- The ReUp,” from SOTU’s new band, D.U.N.G. (Digital Underground Next Generation), will honor the classic album with whimsical renditions and new, funk-filled, cosmically tinged offerings.

“The Chop Shop,” a musically infused talk show, will debut on the Pantheon Podcast Network on August 20 and be available on all major podcast platforms. Hosted by Chopmaster J and S.O.T.U., along with seasoned music professional Judy Klein, the debut episode will review the legacy of Digital Underground and spotlight D.U.N.G. as they modernize Digital Underground’s original funk with a futuristic twist.

Chopmaster J’s health issues began last May with a severe fall at the Home2 Suites by Hilton in Woodland Hills, CA, partially immobilizing him for the rest of the year. Eight months later, he suffered a heart attack, leading to triple bypass surgery and a NDE.

“When people close to you pass away, it is extremely distressing, humbling, and reflective. But when you experience your own near death experience, something inside you is impacted on another level. Having almost entered the realm of the other side; I am deeply committed to my life’s music ministry. I’ve lost so many people close to me, including Tupac, Shock G, and my long-time collaborator and friend Will Waller. I am forever grateful to still be on the planet and able to spread love and joy through the power and peace of music. Our new podcast and D.U.N.G.’s new album, which I executive produced, are just the beginning of a rollout of projects I’ve envisioned for years. One of my favorite Tupac quotes is, ‘You either evolve or become irrelevant.’ Well, irrelevance has never been an option for me. I am going to continue to do what I like to do, which is to create meaningful, memorable music that positively moves and inspires people,’” expresses Chopmaster J.

UK Pop/R&B Artist Morgan Signs With Red Bull Records And Releases New Single “Bum Bum”

The Dancehall-Infused Single Arrives With UK Tour Dates and a Vibrant Video That Celebrates Her Jamaican Roots and Feminine Power

Red Bull Records today announced the London-born singer-songwriter, Morgan, has joined its roster. Ahead of Notting Hill Carnival celebrations, the 23-year-old powerhouse brings her first solo single to the label, “Bum Bum” with an official video and UK tour dates. “Bum Bum” signifies a bold new chapter in Morgan's musical evolution, blending nostalgia with a heady mix of swirling bass, reggae rhythms, and dancefloor pop. Produced by Serban Cazan (Rita Ora, Rag’N’Bone Man), the track pays tribute to Morgan's Jamaican heritage by sampling the iconic Sister Nancy “Bam Bam” vocal, harnessing an infectious dancehall-infused production.

On the signing, Red Bull Records’ Managing Director Greg Hammer shares, “After hearing Morgan’s incredible voice for the first time, we immediately had to find out more about her. Upon discovering her immense talent and amazing story, we pounced at the opportunity to work with her. While she’s been a force in pop, dance, and R&B for years, we’re excited to launch a new chapter of her career with Red Bull Records.”

Inspired by childhood memories of her father playing “Bam Bam,” the accompanying music video sees Morgan breathe new life into the classic sample, bottling the essence of Jamaican culture. Shot by renowned filmmaker Kassandra Powell on Dalston’s Ridley Road Market, the visual sees Morgan strutting through the street, capturing the attention of everyone she passes. From the stunning choreography to the heat palpitating in the bar, it sets the scene for the next song of the summer.

On the making of the single, Morgan says, “‘Bum Bum’ is essentially a nod to my Jamaican heritage - a lot of which you will hear in the music I am going to be sharing with you in this next part of my musical journey. It seemed like a no-brainer to incorporate an iconic sample into my songwriting recently; and who doesn't love Sister Nancy's 'Bam Bam'. I wrote this one with two of my closest writing partners - Serban Cazan & Taneisha Jaxxon - and I couldn't have chosen anyone else to write this with. Be ready guys... I'm back.

Morgan will embark on a tour this November, headlining five shows across the UK, including a date at London’s iconic Jazz Cafe. The tour dates are as follows:

November 25: Glasgow @ The Poetry Club

November 26: Manchester @ YES

November 28: London @ Jazz Café

November 30: Birmingham @ The Sunflower Lounge

December 1: Bristol @ The Louisiana

Morgan’s early career saw her tour the world and release collaborations with beloved dance group Rudimental, whom she went on to write hit songs for. Off the back of that success, she worked with massive names in the electronic space including Purple Disco Machine, Sonny Fodera, Sigma, amongst others. Simultaneously, she broke out as a solo act in 2020 with the sparkling pop debut EP Alien, featuring a co-write from Anne-Marie on the titular track. It laid the runway for her viral single “ADCT” which swiftly hit #1 on the TikTok Trending Sounds chart and UK Top 50. Now with 80 million career streams and a home at Red Bull Records, Morgan’s reintroducing herself and giving fans a taste of what’s to come with “Bum Bum.”

About Morgan

Like most musical greats, Morgan is unafraid to carve her own path. Born to a Jamaican father and Jewish mother, she struggled as a child “with being too Black for my white friends, too white for my Black friends.” This push and pull is something she’s owned through her releases, from the sparkling pop of debut EP Alien, to the dance hits she’s created writing for other artists such as Rudimental, Sigma, and increasingly, K-pop artists. Now with combined streams of over 80 million and a dedicated online following, Morgan is doing things her way, and it’s working. Just as Rihanna has diversified through different eras, Morganapplies that same ethic to her own music, with the unifying thread being her distinctive vocals and understanding of what it takes to make a hit. Freshly signed to a label, the first taste of a project from Morgan is ‘Bum Bum’, where she’s exploring her feminine power and sampling the iconic Sister Nancy tune, a track that mines her Jamaican heritage. With a UK headline tour planned later this year, Morgan is just getting started.

EME MALAFE - "SANTOS" (EP)

Born and raised in Tepito, one of Mexico City's most iconic slums, Eme Malafe is a genuine artist and chronicler of the reality of life in the barrios bravos. Through his music and direct and eloquent lyrics, he has become known for his strong criticism of society and the system.

His most recent work, “Santos,” a film and music by Eme Malafe, presented in 6 chapters, is a story with fictional characters based on real events. Malafe plays the character of El Diablito. In his debut album, the artist delivers each of the songs' original music and the criticism and rebellion embodied in the songs. It is the soundtrack of the story that Malafe addresses in the film in which each song is crucial to each episode, a perfect and very well achieved combination between a music video clip with an episode of a series and ranging from regional, through rap, trap, drill, salsa, EDM and other musical styles

“Santos” is the film that Eme Malafe uses as an artistic visual medium and in a raw way to communicate social problems such as violence, drug trafficking, the disappearance of women, and the trafficking of minors, among others. It is also a chronicle of how a criminal is born and how these events that have become “normal” in a growing and transforming society are not “normal” for everyone.

“Santos” is more than an album of six songs; it is an essential means to at least begin to understand a complex reality in which the poor are blamed for their tragedies.

Without praising the violence and what many must live with, interpreted in his songs beyond those included in his album “Santos,” Eme Malafe conveys a pacifist message against social racism and the cultural pride of belonging to the neighborhood. This is how the artist feels: “If I were born again, I would be born in the barrio.” A phrase that is already identified as his own.

Among many anecdotes that can be told about the artist from the capital, one that stands out is the one in which he was shot and considered dead by more than one media through the news. After his recovery and being close to death, Eme Malafe returned to the studio with a clear idea to perform. After intense work with Radiante Mx (Producer) and Americano (Beatmaker), the result is “Santos”.

He is also a young man who has mobilized thousands of motorcyclists in Mexico City through his social networks, calling all the barrios to become one.

Somos Un Solo Barrio [we are one barrio] is not a concert; it is not an event, it is not a march, it is not a ride; Todos somos un solo barrio' [we all re one barrio] is a celebration of being from this side in the society, of being from the barrios bravos, of belonging here. Today, I ask for a truce: today, I don't want robberies; today, I don't want violence; today, I don't want weapons.

The official figure is that more than 20,000 motorcycles responded to the call in a peaceful and supportive manner, drawing the attention of the national media. Unofficially, it is estimated that close to 100,000 people attended the call, as can be seen in this video.

A native of Taipei City, Rowens is the plural form of ‘rowen’, a second growth of grass or hay in one season, which signifies renaissance after death. Rowens has been inseparable from the guitar since high school, where his love of American, British and Japanese rock in equal measures inspired his musical journey. 旋林Rowens released his first single "Purple Red Rose" in 2023 (watch the official lyric video) followed by "Old Photo" in 2024 (watch the official lyric video). 旋林Rowens handles composition, lyrics, vocals, guitar, bass, production and mixing on his songs, while his collaboration Jeff handles drums and organ. 旋林Rowens named his new single "Pink Rain" in the hope that he could regain his keen perception of his surrounding environment as a child. Yung Lonn Suffers From Stroke, But Makes His Way Back With New Album “The Stroke Couldn’t Kill Me”

Yung Lonn Suffers From Stroke, But Makes His Way Back With New Album “The Stroke Couldn’t Kill Me”

Yung Lonn was raised in the small town of Mansfield, Ohio, as the sole child of his mother. During his formative years, he dedicated himself to basketball, traveling extensively to compete with various AAU teams. While basketball was his primary passion in childhood, he developed an interest in music at the age of 13, beginning to write rap lyrics. For several years, he balanced his commitment to basketball with his burgeoning musical talent. However, upon turning 18, he decided to abandon his basketball aspirations due to persistent hamstring injuries and shifted his focus more seriously towards music, establishing his own brand in the process.

At the age of 21, Yung Lonn formed a musical group called S.T.A.R, which consisted of three artists, including himself, who shared a fervent passion for music and aspirations of achieving mainstream success. Unfortunately, the group disbanded due to changes in their personal lives. Subsequently, he initiated an indie rock band named "The Vacant Lot," where he combined rap with soft rock elements. This band, however, only performed a limited number of shows before the members chose to pursue their individual paths.

Following this, Yung Lonn launched a new brand called ILLEST GENIUS, which embodied his artistic vision and musical identity. He maintained this brand for several years, but as the friends who initially collaborated on the concept departed, he decided to discontinue its use. Since then, Yung Lonn has embarked on a solo career, striving to elevate his name and his new brand, Self Made Music Group, to mainstream recognition.

In 2022, Yung Lonn experienced a stroke, necessitating a period of reflection and recovery before re-entering the music scene. Now, two years later, he has released a new album titled “The Stroke Couldn’t Kill Me.” This album features a collection of dynamic and engaging singles, including "Sober," "Big Dog," and "Spiritual Healing," among others.

Get familiar with the exceptionally talented artist, Yung Lonn, and delve into his newest album, “The Stroke Couldn’t Kill Me,” available now on all major platforms.
